December 29, 2007 According to the National Biodiesel Board (NBB), United States production of biodiesel for 2007 was roughly around 400 million gallons, well below the 1.85 billion gallons per year capacity (21.6% stream factor).  We expected about 350 million gallons to be produced, so this data point validates our projections.  Production roughly equals consumption, as movements of product in and out of the country, as well as inventory, are limited.

December 04, 2007 From our friends at Biofuelsbusiness.com:

After having repeatedly condemned the U.S. subsidized exports of biodiesel (B99), the E.U. biodiesel industry representatives unanimously agreed on Nov. 30 to initiate legal action against this unfair trade practice.

In the framework of the U.S. Federal measures adopted in 2004, biodie... [more] Comments (0)

October 08, 2007 Strong demand from the biodiesel industry for cheaper feedstock (with soy oil prices reaching record highs with every week that goes by) has led to a steady increase in yellow grease production nationwide.

This is in stark contrast to the 3-year low back in February of this year.

This August, 450 million pounds of fat and oil were used toward the production of biodiesel. Over 17% of that amount was yellow grease, up from about 11% back in January and February of this year... [more] Comments (0)

August 07, 2007 The House passed HR 3221, titled "The New Direction for Energy Independence, National Security, and Consumer Protection Act” on August 4.  Curiously, many of the provisions of the other House energy bill, HR 2776, which was tabled on the provision that its contents would be included as an amendment to HR 3221, apparently did not make it it in the final engrossm... July 24, 2007 In the past week oil prices have increased strongly following the International Energy Agency’s 2.5% upward revision of its 2008 oil demand forecast.  Last week we saw the OPEC Reference Basket of Crudes -- a weighted sum of oil prices from select crude oils produced by OPEC member nati... July 07, 2007 We're seeing an increasing discrepancy between listed prices for soy oil on the CBOT and prices for soy oil that is actually delivered. July soy oil on the CBOT is at 37.13 cents per pound; trade reports registered product movement last week at 250 basis points under the CBOT quote.

Some crushers and refiners of soy oil, especially in regions away from the soybean-producing states such as the West Coast, will likely further increase that spread over the next few weeks, simply be... [more] Comments (0)

July 01, 2007 What a day on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) on Friday. July soy oil ended 106 points higher, at 36.63 cents per pound, the "highest level since June 1984 on continuation charts amid tighter supply forecast and spillover strength from palm oil and crude oil futures," according to reports from the floor.

June 29, 2007 A paper published in the Archives of Toxicology highlights the dangers of using vegetable oil as a substitute for diesel fuel (DF) in internal combustion diesel engines.  Biodiesel's emissions are only slightly more mutagenic than DF's and are still considered safe and reasonable.

The paper, titled 'Strong mutagenic effects of diesel engine emissions using ve... [more] Comments (0)
